If you are among the more fortunate, you have health insurance. Whether you are covered by an individual health insurance policy or a group health plan, you should be very thankful to have it available during these difficult times.

Although there are those with medical coverage, it does not mean that these individuals have all their medical need covered by their policy. According to studies the out of pocket expenses, for an adult with an insurance policy through their employer, has increase thirty four percent from the years 2007 to 2007. Since there are always going to be something that your medical coverage will not cover you for, and since their are millions of Americans with out a medical insurance plan, I thought I would share some tips on keeping your required medical expenses to a minimum.

One way to save is on prescribed medications. Many have saved on prescriptions by not having them filled, but this is not the solution to your problem. When you are at you doctors office and they want to give you a prescription always ask them if they have samples that you can get. This will can give you a week or two of free medications. If you are informed that there are no samples for that particular medication then ask if there is another medication that will work the same, and has samples available in the office. You should also ask if the medication is available in generic. Getting a generic brand medication will save you large amounts of money on all your prescriptions. Mail in prescription programs are another way to keep medication cost down. If you have a medication that is taken regularly then you can mail out the script and receive a 90 day supply for a 30 day co payment.

Many feel awkward with this next tip, but it can end up saving you hundreds of dollars. When you are visiting a doctor, hospital or medical facility ask them about discounts available, or if they will be able to charge you a reduced price. There are many medical professionals that are willing to lower prices, especially if you pay the remaining balance in a timely manner.

There are more ways to save and with a little internet research you will be able to find various ways to put money in your pocket, instead spending it on your medical. Everyone is on a tight budget theses days, and lowering your out of pocket medical expenses will prove to go a long way.
